A Mystical Rebellion

Am I allowed to do that?

I follow a page on Instagram about prison ministry.

Prison seems quite different in the U.S. compared to here (Australia). If people are in a maximum security prison here, it’s either because they did a very very bad thing, or because someone made a mistake convicting them.
If someone is in a maximum security prison over there, it’s either because they did a very very bad thing, or because their skin is black.

I watched a video of volunteers setting up a ‘mall’ in a prison with donated gifts, so that the (death row) inmates could choose gifts for their children that they would be having a special Christmas visitation with.

My initial bodily response was a positive one. Warmth. Empathy. Happiness.
Then I saw the first comment (paraphrased)- “Yeah and what about the family of the person this guy murdered? Do they get free gifts for their kids too?”

Wait a second…
Am I allowed to like this video? Am I allowed to smile? To wipe happy tears?
Is it right to appreciate and celebrate meaningful moments in high security prisons?
Is it right to be happy for the relationship between an incarcerated father and his children?
Am I in the right, here? Or the wrong?
